The earliest known name of Mount Washington was “The Crossroads” because of its location around the intersection of Highway 31E and Highway 44. The Crossroads name was later changed to Mt. Vernon, but when a post office was applied for, it was discovered there was already a city in Kentucky with that name, and consequently, Mount Washington was the name accepted.

Part of the Greater Louisville Region, home to over 1.4 million people, Mt. Washington is located in Bullitt County and nestled just a few minutes from the I-65 Corridor. Because of its proximity to Louisville, Bowling Green, Fort Knox/Elizabethtown, Nashville and the Bourbon Trail, Mt. Washington is an ideal location for business, tourism, and recreation.

The region has a dynamic economic development resource that has continued growth. In 2021 it was announced Ford announce two electric battery plants in neighboring Hardin County, investing $5.8 billion and creating 5,000 jobs, the largest job announcement in Kentucky history. Bullitt County has continued recent growth with companies including Amazon, The Geek Squad and Gordon Food Services. These companies ensure the job market will remain strong with other global corporations considering our area for expansion.

Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourist & Convention Center announced in 2013 that Bullitt County is an official Trailhead for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Bernheim Forest, our four beautiful Wineries, Glassworks and Golf Courses make this a great place to visit or live.

Bullitt County has its own campus as an extension of Jefferson Community and Technical College and is within a short distance of University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, Sullivan University, Bellarmine College and Spencerian College. There are also various technical schools in the Louisville area. The Bullitt County Board of Education serves over 13,000 students and currently has several building projects underway to provide the most updated means of education.

Today, Mount Washington is a vibrant and thriving city of well over 14,000 people. Mount Washington recently received recognition as one of the safest communities for children and families in Kentucky. The town’s Bullitt East High School was named a “school of distinction,” ranked in the top 10 performing schools in Kentucky. Volunteer organizations such as the Lions and Lioness clubs, sponsor both the fall and spring town festivals, and help lead the way to a successful community. Active organizations, top notch schools, forward-looking city government leadership and a devoted group of citizens who respect our towns history bodes well for a bright future for the City of Mount Washington.
